Quick KEY

Episode 1: Laying the foundation

Just like a house, setting up strong foundations is the basis of all businesses. This starts with goal setting.

Have you thought about the lifestyle you want? What’s the ultimate aim of owning your own business? How much money do you want to be earning? And what’s your plan for getting there? Fill out the exercise ‘How you feel about yourself and your business today’.

Be honest and be critical. This exercise will be insightful months down the track when looking back. Benchmarks are an important tool to refer back to confirm your achievements as these are often overlooked and underestimated!

For this episode you will need:

  • Workbook: Budget template
  • Workbook: How do you feel about yourself and your business today exercise
  • Workbook: SWOT exercise module

EPISODE 2: Getting into the right mindset

What exactly is a business mindset? Having the right mindset is key to success in any trade industry. The right attitude for success will grow your business in strength and size. Now that you’re a business owner, you’ll need to start thinking and acting confidently like one, and being both accountable for your actions and inactions. A large part of this is understanding yourself - and others.

For this episode, you’ll need to take the Internal Representational System questionnaire provided below. You’ll also need to refer back to the email sent during sign up. This will have a web link to a Disc Profile test. With your results for both these tests, you’ll gain a better understanding of why you communicate, behave and think the way you do and insights into how you can interact with employees and clients more effectively.

We also highly recommend you visiting the Business Strategies for Tradesmen online store where you can pick up a copy of the book ‘The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People’ by Stephen R. Covey. A great read for anyone running their own business!

For this episode you will need:

  • Workbook: Weblink to DISC Profile

  • Purchase: ‘The 7 habits of highly effective people’ book (via BSFT E-Store)

episode 3: PLanning for success

It’s time to prepare your business vision, mission and culture statements. To continue to thrive as a business in the future, it’s important to look ahead and plan how’d you like your business to operate. We’ve also going to set up our 90-day planner. Achieving goals and outcomes is all in the planning and preparation.

Some of the most successful trades businesses understand how to market and sell their products and services. You can do this too with a few simple steps. First, we’ll look at your market, customer avatar, and unique selling point. Then we’ll create a complete 12 month marketing plan.

For this episode you will need:

  • Workbook: Avatar profile

A common mistake made by small business owners is to setup a business that relies on its people and not systems. As a consequence when staff are on holidays, are unwell, or even leave the business - the business can no longer run. Companies like McDonald’s can operate anywhere in the world and still provide the same level of service because it runs on systems not on people. A good business model is one that can be replicated for success, while running effortlessly when you’re not there.

For this episode, you’ll complete the ‘What slows you down’ list. Most tradies have many great talents and think they can do it all. This can really stall the growth of the business. By outsourcing the day to day back-office tasks, you have more time to focus on generating income and leads. In the workbook, list what tasks you put aside, frustrate and annoy you, under each category - admin, finance, operations, marketing and sales, HR. Once you do this, set up procedures for these tasks or you can outsource them. Find someone appropriate to do the task for you, such as a book keeper or marketing agency.

For this episode, you will need:

  • Workbook: What slows you down?
  • Workbook: Task allocator
  • Workbook: Systems checklist

Policies and procedures will see your business running to the best of its ability. They ensure you’re legally compliant for tax, work cover and other insurance purposes, as well as providing guidelines and entitlements for employees. They also warrant that the business runs with consistency, and in particular every person you deal with, clients and suppliers, know how you operate.

When developing service, credit, payment, supplier and HR policies and procedures for your business, you need to think about the things that would upset you if you were an employee, supplier or client dealing with the business. These pain points should then be included or mitigated through terms spelt out in your policies or procedures. Make sure you contrast a job well done against one that is poorly done. To finish, utilise the policy and procedures template to begin creating your own.

For this episode, you will need:

  • Workbook: What would upset You?
  • Workbook: Developing policies and procedures

It’s time to manage your cashflow, budget and payments. Remember, when we look at finance there are 5 golden rules that you must apply and understand. They are:

  1. Know your financial position
  2. Never mix personal and business finances
  3. Seek immediate help when in financial trouble
  4. Consistently communicate with creditors & debtors
  5. Engage a certified book keeper and accountant

Your financial team need to understand your unique needs so it’s important you take the time to query them to make sure they are the right fit for you

For this episode, you will need:

  • Workbook: Profit and Loss balance sheet
  • Workbook: Glossary of financial terms
  • Workbook: Questions for our accountant

As tradesmen we believe that we work with our hands, but being a business owner is more than just knowing your trade. There is a human side to business that can make or break you. This includes your relationship with clients, employees and suppliers.

It can’t be overstated that the core of any business is relationships.

As we will discuss in this episode, the way we speak, the tone of voice or the volume, and how we look (crumpled, dirty shirt) never go unnoticed. How we deal with people is what ultimately sets us apart from our competitors. The 10 Little Things exercise is about going that extra mile. It’s about clients remembering your business. It’s about them picking up the phone for a second or third time to hire you for another job. So, what are 10 small things you can start doing in your business today to provide next level customer service?

For this episode, you will need:

  • Woorkbook: The 10 Little Things

Now that your a business leader, you’ll be expected to make informed decision and lead others confidently. Leadership involves equipping people with training, tools and skills as well as your time, energy and emotional intelligence.

In this episode, we will talk about some of the qualities necessary to lead others. To improve your leadership skills, it’s important to look around at those people who YOU admire. Who impresses you? They can be real people in your life or someone you don’t know but admire, such as a sports player. Consider and write down, what about them has impacted you? What do you most admire about your role models? How do they act? What do they say? Why do people listen to them?

For this episode, you will need:

  • Workbook: Role Model Qualities
